IBM GBS - background in the UK

Hello,

I'm doing some research concerning IBM GBS at the moment with the aim of landing a job in the UK as a management consultant.

I've had a look on the net but can't really find a good summary (other than sectors/areas they work) which will show my knowledge of IBM GBS. What i seem to have found could be interchangeable with any of the other consultancies. Does anyone know any specifics about IBM GBS which it may be worth me mentioning or looking at? I'm after a cheat sheet.

Any help would be appreciated,

Many thanks,

Jack

Are you coming from a third world country? Just curious?

I have worked with IBM and can advise that unless you want to remain a commodity consultant all your life-do not waste your time with them. They are increasingly being marginalzed by smaller boutique firms that do not have the baggage of selling software under the garb of Business Consulting and are loosing out big time on many large projects.

Which means that you will probably end up working as a PM/coder/BA in most cases and with a heavy IT focus. If you are expecting anything else, you will have a bit of a shock if you join them

Mr Cool to ukconsultfan (#1)

IBM is a large monotone, monochrome, monotonous IT provider, which has an arm that offer system integration services. They prefer to refer to these services as “management consultancy” because they believe it will allow them to charge higher day rates and sufficiently confuse people who want to be management consultants into working for them.

Given the very large amount of money that the company makes from selling hardware and software, they also employ oodles of people who advise large organisations on how best to configure (preferably IBM) hardware and software (and middleware and enterprise service buses and data taxis and code carrying rickshaws) and they like to refer to this work as Strategy Consultants. They are not so naive as to believe this will allow them charge McKinsey level rates, but it does allow their senior Enterprise Architects to say “I’m a strategy consultant for IBM” when they are at their monthly train spotting meeting.

If you are not a techy geek – stay away. If you are proud to be a techy geek and like big monolithic cultures – they’re the right people for you.
