Ask

Do they get to work on policies & strategy, or is it more helping them implement?

Secret Squirrel to Ask (#1)

Ask,

This has to be one of the laziest questions posted on here for some time.

The short answer is that, other than lose sensitive data, MCs work at all levels of government and provide the full range of services.

This includes: setting policy, designing the correct portfolio to deliver the polocy, manage implementation, business analysis, system development, process re-engineering, right down to noddy project support.

You should think about which companies you are interested in and do some research. This information is not a secret and can be found on all good company websites.

For example:

http://mckinsey.com/clientservice/publicsector/

http://deloitte.com/dtt/section_node/0,1042,sid%253D2857,00.html

http://paconsulting.com/industries/government_services/

http://www.accenture.com/Global/Services/By_Industry/Government_and_Public_Service/

Hope that helps

Either - similar to consulting in the private sector, it depends on the project, the firm, and the kind of work they offer.

Jugs Jude to anon (#3)

They do the real work in the public service, while the cosseted idiots that work there stare at the clock, counting up thier flexi and sick days.

Unless you work at PA Consulting, where most consultants are looking for new jobs before all the government contracts are pulled
