What did you do after your 2 year grad scheme?

Lots of people talk about doing their 2 year grad programme in consulting and moving on to something else.

I'm interested to see what doors opened for you after your 2 years? Did you stay? If not what did you do? Regret it?

Interesting point. Which goes against the grain here as most of the stuff in this forum is lets just say a couple of notches below hopelessly pathetic.

I learnt a lot in my two years. Always ask questions and show a hunger for learning. Developed good excel, powerpoint and word skills which are essential in prgressing upwards.

Understand how the business world works: org structure, working expectations, conduct et al.

I know some people who learn nothing, whilst other devote a lot of time of bettering themselves. It's in your gift I suppose.

I would say that it accelerated my career by 3 years. Comparing myself to my University peers, those who didn't get the big-brand training are earning £15k less and are a couple of promotions behind me.

I left 6 months before the end of my grad scheme as it was adding nothing to my skill set - they treated me as a cheap resource doing a 'normal' job that non grad-scheme people got paid 2-3x as much for doing. Am now at a small firm and it's a world apart - much more responsibility and definitely recognition.

However, i'm not naive enough to think that I wouldn't have got into my new firm without the blue-chip name/experience.

Following 2 years on a consulting Grad Scheme I walked into a job within corporate strategy for a major telecoms firm.

Whilst I didn't desperately enjoy my time in consulting it undoubtedly enabled me to secure the role I did.

As a result I now have significant responsibility within the organisation, have experienced rapid progression and brief the CEO/CFO/Board a couple of times a week.

My major advice would be if you know you want to get out of consulting make sure you make the most of any time remaining e.g. widen your client base, experience different roles, work on TL in the industry you want to move into.
