Going back to a company after turning them down

regret

About a year ago i turned down an offer from a company after initially accepting. Have I burnt my bridges totally with them? They have a similar role advertised now that i am thinking of applying for, but unsure as to whether its worth it.

JRF to regret (#1)

Wouldn't have though so provided you were reasonably clear about why the change and kept it all civil.

I rejected a grad position from a large consultancy firm after initially accepting it (due to deadlines on their offer) as I got a better approach from another firm.

However intereviewed sucessfully with them as an experieced hire about 18mths later and there was no issue, though I still didn't take the role after the discussion.

Guess three times might be pushing it so its a good job I am happy where I am!

Anon to JRF (#2)

I did exactly the same, turned down an offer after initially accepting it. then realised I had made a terrible mistake after a couple of months and got back to them. In the end they offered me the job again. I think as long as you were civil and gave them good reasons for turning down the job then it shouldn't be a problem. I also think given the period of time that has passed since you turned down the job its probably of no consequence any more. Hope, this helps and good luck

Chris Sale, Prism Executive Recruitment to Anon (#3)

For quite a few reasons companies often take a fairly negative view of candidates that change their mind. If there was a good and genuine reason at the time, and that reason no longer applies and you didn't otherwise mess them around then you might be OK. A large firm is less likely to be bothered than a small one. No harm in trying them again: they can only say "No"! However I think you need to be pretty clear that you would accept a role this time around if offered, subject to the salary being right: consultancy is a small world sometimes and it wouldn't do you any good to get a reputation as a time waster.
